Lofty Lady from the East
This is a telephoto perspective of Whitehorse Mountain, taken from the Skagit Valley. Although at 6,840 feet the mountain is not particularly high, it seems tall and majestic rising steeply 6,000 feet from a relatively low elevation in 1.8 miles. With its unique shape and white cap even in the summertime, it has always been one of my favorite Washington mountains. Legend has it that in spring and early summer, when viewed from below, the glacier and snowpack on the mountain resemble the pattern of a white horse. But there is another legend that for me better evokes the spirit of this spirit of this mountain. The mountain was known as "So-bahli-ahli" in the Lushootseed language used by local Coast Salish tribes, meaning a "lofty lady from the east". In the lower right part of the image a few snow geese are flying by. I could hear their distant bird call on during this most memorable and awe-inspiring sunset in the Skagit Valley.
