Sunrise from Melakwa Lake Camp
In the summer of 2016 my family and a few friends (all women/young girls-LOL) were all camped out next to a small tarn close to Melakwa Lake. I awoke close to sunrise and I knew that I would need a cup of coffee to get the day going. So I fired up the stove, put on the pot for boiling water and then glanced behind me. A scene similar to this image is what I saw start to emerge. Still half asleep I grabbed my camera and tripod and stumbled over the boulder rocks, shoe laces untied, looking for a good vantage point. In five minutes the show was over but I managed to sneak in this image and a few more. Thanks goodness I needed a cup of coffee on this early morning!
We did this hike as part of a 17 mile loop trip called the Melakwa Lake Pratt Lake Traverse. It makes for a perfect 3 day backpacking trip with camps at Melakwa and beautiful Pratt Lakes. The triangular lit up peak in the distance is Kaleeton, the second highest summit in this area north of Snoqualmie Pass and is also an excellent but very steep climbing destination.
