Nature's Best/Smithsonian Wilderness Forever Semi-Finalists
Greetings everyone--I have a 5 photos selected as semi finalists for Nature's Best/Smithsonian Wilderness Forever Exhibit coming this September. All of these photos are from our Sierra Club Outings Trips: Maroon Bells, Glacier Peak, Wind River, and Ansell Adams Wilderness Areas. Thanks to Eileen for mentioning this opportunity!
In 2014, the Wilderness Act will reach its Golden Anniversary. In tribute to this milestone, Wilderness50—a coalition of government agencies, nonprofit groups, foundations, and other supporters—have joined together to celebrate the 50-year mark through numerous educational events, including the "Wilderness Forever" nationwide photography competition and print exhibition at the Smithsonian. In the past I have not participated very many of these photo competitions, but I liked the theme of this one, raising awareness of Wilderness Areas and the need for further protection. Actually only about 1% of American Land has the "Wilderness Designation" and more of these lands need to be protected for future generations to enjoy. The Wilderness Act defines Wilderness in part as "“an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.”
I decided to submit several photos from my annual backpacking adventures with the Sierra Club Outings group. Recently I received an email from Nature's Best Magazine/Smithsonian informing me that 5 of these photos were selected as semi-finalists in the photography competition. This is a great honor and I am hopeful that 1 or more of these images may one day grace the walls of the Smithsonian. If not, I am still very happy with the semi-finalist recognition!
